The Goldfish Who Wanted to Run
Goldie was a small orange goldfish who lived in a shiny blue bowl on a sunny windowsill. Every day, she watched children running past her window—laughing, chasing balls, playing tag. Goldie loved swimming in circles around her plastic castle, but she wondered what it would feel like to run on the grass, with the wind rushing through her fins.
One starry night, when the house was quiet, a magical spark twinkled in Goldie's bowl. Suddenly, she grew two tiny legs! She climbed out of her bowl and hopped onto the windowsill. Outside, in the garden moonlight, something magnificent was waiting.
It was a sphinx, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise old owl. The sphinx smiled kindly. "I am Sophie," she said. "I felt your wish to run, little fish. Come, let me show you the world."
Goldie took her first wobbly steps on the grass. It felt wonderful and strange! She and Sophie spent the night running through meadows, over hills, and beside a sparkling brook. Goldie felt free, but her legs grew tired and her scales felt dry in the cool night air.
"Running is beautiful," Sophie said gently, "but every creature has its own special gift. You miss something very special, don't you?"
Goldie nodded. She missed the cool water, the way she could glide and dance without ever getting tired. Sophie led her back to the garden pond, where a tiny fish was trapped in some weeds, unable to swim free.
"Only someone who loves swimming can help," Sophie said.
Goldie dove into the pond. The moment she touched the water, her legs disappeared and her orange fins returned. She swam gracefully through the weeds and freed the trapped fish, who bubbled with joy.
Goldie realized then that she didn't need to run to be brave. Swimming was her magic, her adventure, her gift to the world. As the sun rose, she swam back to her bowl, happy to be exactly who she was—a goldfish who could make a difference, one swim at a time.
