The Goldfish Who Touched the Sky
Lily loved swimming in her family's backyard pool more than anything in the world. Every summer day, she'd splash and dive until her fingers wrinkled like prunes. But her best friend was Finnegan, a tiny goldfish who lived in a glass bowl on the patio table.
Finnegan would watch Lily swimming through the glass, his orange scales shimmering in the sunlight. Sometimes he'd blow bubbles that seemed to say, "I wish I could swim with you!"
One hot afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. But Lily kept swimming, laughing as raindrops began to splatter the pool's surface like tiny jumping beans.
Suddenly—FLASH! A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree nearby. Its branches crackled with golden light, and something magical happened. The pool water began to glow, shimmering like liquid starlight.
Finnegan's bowl tipped over in the wind. Instead of flopping on the ground, he floated toward the glowing pool, growing bigger and bigger with each stroke. By the time he reached the water, Finnegan was as large as Lily!
"You made a wish!" Finnegan said, his voice like soft music. "The lightning magic heard your heart!"
Lily gasped with wonder. "You can talk!"
"And we can swim together!" Finnegan flipped his golden tail, sending rainbows dancing across the water. They played chase, racing through the glowing water while the storm painted colors across the sky.
But as the last lightning flash faded far away, Finnegan began to shrink.
"Don't go!" Lily cried.
"I must," Finnegan said, growing smaller. "But remember—the magic was in your friendship all along. The lightning just helped you see it."
He grew tiny again, and Lily gently placed him back in his bowl. His scales still shimmered with a hint of starlight.
The next morning, the water in the pool was ordinary again. But when Lily looked closely at Finnegan, she noticed something new—a tiny lightning-shaped mark on his golden side.
"Best friends forever," she whispered, touching the glass.
Finnegan swished his tail and sent up a single, perfect bubble that popped like a tiny promise. Some magic stays with you always, even when the storm is long gone.
