The Goldfish Who Swam Through Stars
Lily's goldfish, Finne, was not like other fish. While her friends' goldfish swam in circles around their bowls, Finne would swim right up to the glass and press his nose against it, watching the stars through Lily's bedroom window.
One night, when moonlight spilled across her room like liquid silver, Lily saw something magical. Finne wasn't just swimming in his water. With each stroke of his golden-orange fins, ripples of starlight spread across his bowl. And when he swam upward toward the surface, tiny stars followed in his wake.
"Finne?" Lily whispered, pressing her face close to the bowl.
The goldfish swam to the surface and—impossibly—leaped right out of the water! But instead of flopping on the table, he kept swimming, gliding through the air as if it were water, his scales shimmering like a tiny constellation.
"Come with me," Finne seemed to say without words, circling Lily's head.
Her heart pounding with wonder, Lily reached out her hand. Finne swam closer, and suddenly she felt light—weightless! Her feet lifted off the floor, and she was swimming too, right there in her bedroom, the air thick and soft like water.
Together they swam out the window and into the night sky. Past the moon's craters they swam, through clouds that tasted like cotton candy, around constellations that twinkled hello. Far below, the ocean's water reflected the stars, and for a moment, Lily couldn't tell where the sky ended and the sea began.
"Why can we swim in the sky?" Lily asked.
Finne did a joyful flip. "Because imagination is deeper than any water!" the stars seemed to answer on his behalf. "Anyone who believes in magic can swim anywhere!"
They danced with the Northern Lights, racing comets and high-fiving meteors. Finally, Finne guided her back to her window, both of them glowing with stardust.
Back in his bowl, Finne swam his usual circles, but now Lily knew the truth. Her goldfish wasn't just a pet—he was a guardian of secret worlds, waiting for anyone brave enough to believe in impossible things.
That night, Lily fell asleep with stars still dancing behind her eyelids, dreaming of all the places she could go swimming, as long as she remembered that the real magic wasn't in the water or the sky, but in the courage to imagine.
