The Goldfish Who Swam Through Lightning
Lily loved her pet goldfish Finn more than anything in the world. Every day after school, she would sit by his bowl and tell him stories about her day. Finn would swim happily in circles, his golden scales shimmering like tiny stars.
One rainy afternoon, as Lily was eating a sweet papaya for snack, the sky turned dark purple. CRACK! Lightning flashed across the window, something strange happened. Finn's bowl began to glow with a soft blue light.
"Lily!" said a tiny voice.
Lily nearly dropped her papaya. "Who said that?"
"It's me! Finn!" The goldfish was floating above the water, surrounded by magical sparkles. "The lightning magic made me talk! And look outside - see those funny-looking fireflies?"
Lily peered through the rain-streaked window. Dozens of fireflies were fluttering around the garden, but they moved in a jerky, bouncy way - like silly little zombie fireflies!
"They're not scary zombie fireflies," Finn explained. "They're magical! The lightning woke them up to dance in the rain. They only come out during storms."
Lily's eyes widened with wonder. "Can we go outside?"
"Hold my bowl," Finn said. "And bring your papaya!"
Outside, in the warm summer rain, something magical happened. Lily placed Finn on the grass, and suddenly the water expanded into a puddle big enough for swimming. But Finn didn't just swim in water - he could swim through the air itself!
"Come with me!" Finn called.
Lily touched the glowing water, and suddenly SHE was swimming too - right through the raindrops! The zombie fireflies danced around them, leaving trails of rainbow light. Together, they swam through the storm, laughing and spinning.
They shared the sweet papaya with the fireflies, who gobbled it up happily. For one magical hour, Lily and Finn were the best swimming buddies in the whole world.
As the storm passed, Finn and Lily floated back to the ground. Finn settled back into his bowl, now just a regular goldfish again. But Lily knew the truth - magic was real, and friendship could be found in the most unexpected places.
"Same time next storm?" Lily whispered.
Finn swam three circles and blew a tiny bubble. Yes.
