The Goldfish Who Swam Through Lightning
Maya pressed her **palm** against the cool glass of her bedroom window, watching the summer storm dance across the sky. She loved storms – they made the world feel magical, like anything could happen.
CRACK!
A bolt of **lightning** split the darkness, illuminating something strange in the backyard. Maya gasped. There, glowing in the flash, was a tiny fishbowl she'd never seen before, sitting under the old oak tree.
Maya grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots. Mum would say stay inside, but this felt important. She slipped out the back door, rain tapping a rhythm on her hood.
The fishbowl contained one small **goldfish** with shimmering orange scales. But as Maya leaned closer, the most impossible thing happened – the goldfish wasn't **swimming** in water. It was swimming through AIR, darting and looping like the air itself was its ocean.
"You're magical," Maya whispered.
The goldfish swam to the glass and nodded. Actually nodded.
"I'm Finn," said a tiny voice, like wind chimes. "And I need your help."
Another lightning bolt flashed. Finn shivered. "I lost my family in the storm. We sky-swimmers ride lightning to travel, but this one was too wild."
Maya's heart ached. Being lost in a storm was scary.
"How can I help?" she asked.
"Your **palm**," said Finn. "Sky-swimmers can travel through human hands. Your palm becomes a portal home."
Maya hesitated. What if she dropped him? What if it didn't work? But Finn looked so hopeful, and she knew what it felt like to be alone.
She cupped her hands together. Finn swam from his bowl into her **palm**, and suddenly Maya felt warm, like she held a little piece of sunshine.
"Ready?" Finn asked.
Maya nodded and raised her hands toward the next lightning bolt.
WHOOSH!
Finn shot upward, trailing sparkles, merging with the lightning like he belonged there. Through the storm's glow, Maya saw dozens of glowing fish swimming through the bolt – Finn's family!
They swam down together, circling Maya in a rainbow dance of gratitude.
"Thank you, Maya!" Finn called. "You're part of our sky-school now. Anytime you see lightning, watch for us!"
Maya waved as they swam away, disappearing into the clouds.
Back in her room, Maya's mum brought hot chocolate. "You're soaked! What were you doing out there?"
Maya smiled, pressing her warm **palm** against the window. "Just making friends."
Outside, the lightning flashed, and if you looked closely, you might see tiny goldfish swimming through the storm, reminding anyone brave enough to help that the most magical adventures begin with kindness.
