The Goldfish Who Spied on Storms

Lily loved her pet goldfish, Bubbles, more than anything in the world. He lived in a sparkly blue bowl on her nightstand, swimming around his tiny plastic castle. But Lily had a secret—she suspected Bubbles wasn't an ordinary fish.

One evening, while thunder rumbled outside, Lily noticed something strange. Bubbles was swimming in rapid circles, creating tiny whirlpools in his bowl. Each time **lightning** flashed through her window, his scales would glow bright orange!

"Bubbles," Lily whispered, "are you... a **spy**?"

The goldfish stopped swimming and floated right up to the glass surface. To Lily's astonishment, he nodded his head—three times!

That's when Lily remembered the story her grandmother had told her about magical storm fish. These special creatures could sense when big weather was coming. Bubbles wasn't just spying on the storm; he was trying to warn someone!

"Who needs to know, Bubbles?" she asked.

He swam toward the garden window. Lily's eyes grew wide. The rabbits! Her little brother's pet rabbits were in their hutch outside!

Lily grabbed her raincoat and was **running** toward the back door when she remembered her shoes were by the back door. She pulled on her yellow boots and burst into the rainy backyard. The wind howled around her as she reached the rabbit hutch.

But the latch was stuck! She pulled and pulled, but it wouldn't budge. The rain poured harder. The rabbits were huddled in the corner, shivering.

Then she remembered—her mom had planted **spinach** in the garden boxes right next to the hutch! The leaves were big and strong. Lily grabbed several spinach leaves and wove them together into a thick, green rope. With all her might, she looped it around the latch and pulled.

*Click!* The hatch opened!

Lily quickly carried each rabbit inside, one by one, setting them down safely in the warm kitchen. Bubbles was waiting at the window, his scales still glowing softly.

"Thank you, friend," Lily whispered, pressing her finger against the glass.

The goldfish did a happy flip, and Lily knew this was the beginning of many magical adventures together.

From that night on, whenever storms approached, Lily and Bubbles worked together to keep all their animal friends safe. And sometimes, just sometimes, she could have sworn she saw Bubbles wearing a tiny imaginary spy hat.
