The Goldfish Who Ran Through Streams
Lily loved her goldfish, Orange Peel, more than anything in the world. He swam in circles in his glass bowl on her nightstand, his shimmering scales catching sunlight like tiny coins.
"I wish you could see the world," Lily whispered, pressing her nose against the glass.
Orange Peel bubbles in reply.
One rainy afternoon, Lily discovered something magical. She'd placed Orange Peel's bowl beside a trickling stream in her backyard. The running water seemed to hum with an ancient song. Suddenly, Orange Peel leaped—not flopped, but LEAPED—right out of his bowl and into the stream!
"Wait!" Lily cried, splashing after him.
But Orange Peel didn't need saving. He was growing—growing bigger and bigger until he was the size of a dolphin. His scales turned from orange to glittering gold.
"Come, friend," the fish said in a voice like river stones clicking together. "The water remembers everything. Let me show you."
Lily held onto his golden fin as they swam through the stream, which had become a swirling rainbow of colors. They raced past mermaids playing tag with otters, sailed through underwater caves filled with singing crystals, and danced with jellyfish that glowed like tiny moons.
"This is the water's gift," Orange Peel said. "It carries stories from every ocean, every puddle, every tear ever cried."
They reached a magnificent underwater palace where water from all the world's rivers gathered in a brilliant, bubbling fountain.
"You must choose," Orange Peel said sadly. "Stay here in the magical water forever, or return home and become my friend in the ordinary world again."
Lily thought of her room, her parents, her cozy bed. But mostly, she thought of Orange Peel swimming alone in his small bowl.
"I'll go back," she said. "But promise me something?"
"Anything."
"Every rainy day, we'll come to this stream. You'll show me magic, and I'll be your friend in both worlds."
Orange Peel shrank back to his normal size, and they tumbled onto the grass, Lily soaking wet but laughing.
Now, whenever it rains, Lily and her goldfish friend visit the stream. And if you listen carefully on rainy days, you might hear the sound of running water carrying two friends on their newest adventure.
