The Goldfish Who Ran Away
Leo was running through his backyard, his sneakers thumping against the grass. The summer sun warmed his face as he chased butterflies and played imaginary games. But Leo felt lonely sometimes. His parents said he was too old for imaginary friends, but Leo knew better.
"Leo!" A tiny voice squeaked from the fishbowl in his room.
Leo froze. He tiptoed inside and peered at his orange goldfish. "Did you just speak?"
The goldfish swam to the glass's edge. "I'm Finley, and I've been waiting months for you to notice me! I'm magical, you see."
Leo's eyes widened. "Magic? Real magic?"
Finley did a flip. "Jump behind the palm tree in your yard at midnight. There's a whole world waiting."
That night, Leo snuck outside. The palm tree's leaves swayed even though there was no wind. As Leo approached, the tree trunk glowed golden, revealing a secret door.
"Hurry!" Finley's voice came from a pocket of water he'd brought in a jar. "The magic only lasts until dawn!"
They stepped through—and gasped. A world of candy-colored rivers and trees made of glitter stretched before them. But something was wrong. Shadow creatures were stealing the colors, turning everything gray.
"Only a true friend can stop them," Finley whispered. "Someone who believes in magic enough to fight for it."
Leo grabbed Finley's jar. "Together?"
"Together."
They were running through rainbow fields, Leo clutching Finley, as shadows chased them. Leo didn't run away—he ran toward the biggest shadow. "STOP IT! This world is beautiful!"
Finley glowed brighter than ever. Magic burst from the jar, and the shadows dissolved into sparkles. Color flooded back across the land.
When they returned home, Leo knew something had changed. Finley was still just a goldfish in his bowl—or was he? Sometimes, late at night, Leo would hear a tiny splash and see fin movements that looked suspiciously like waves.
"You're my best friend," Leo whispered before bed.
The goldfish did a little flip, and somewhere, in a magical world just a palm tree away, a tiny splash echoed back.
