The Goldfish Who Played Star Padel
Lily's pet goldfish, Finnick, was no ordinary fish. While most goldfish swam in circles chasing flakes, Finnick spent his nights pressing his nose against the glass of his bowl, watching the sky.
One evening, as lightning crackled across the dark clouds, Finnick did something impossible. He leaped right out of his bowl and began to float toward Lily's open window.
"Wait!" Lily cried, grabbing her jar of fireflies. "I'm coming with you!"
Together they drifted upward, past the rooftops and into the clouds. There, amidst flashes of lightning, they found him—a magnificent bull made entirely of silver starlight, his horns gleaming like crescent moons.
"You're late," said Star-Bull, his voice booming like distant thunder. "The match starts now."
He tossed something that sparkled like captured lightning. It bounced toward Finnick.
"What do I do?" Finnick asked, trembling.
"Hit it back!" called Lily. "Believe in yourself!"
Finnick swished his tail and—WHAP! The lightning ball sailed through the clouds, leaving a trail of glittering sparks.
"Not bad, little fish," Star-Bull chuckled. "This is padel, the game of the stars. We play with lightning because it's the only thing that moves fast enough."
For hours they played, Finnick and Star-Bull batting the lightning ball back and forth. Sometimes Finnick missed. Sometimes the lightning zipped past him. But Star-Bull never laughed—only nodded and said, "Again. Try once more."
When dawn began to paint the sky pink, Star-Bull lowered Finnick and Lily gently back to Lily's bedroom.
"Why did you play with me?" Finnick asked. "I'm just a small goldfish."
Star-Bull's starlight eyes twinkled. "Size doesn't matter, little friend. What matters is that you're brave enough to try. Tonight, you played with lightning itself. Remember that courage."
As he faded into the morning light, he left behind something small and silver—a tiny golden paddle, just Finnick's size.
Now, every night when Lily sleeps, Finnick practices in his bowl, swishing his golden paddle through the water, dreaming of the day he'll play among the stars again. And sometimes, if you look carefully at the sky during a lightning storm, you might see a small fish leaping between the clouds, playing the most wonderful game in the universe.
