The Goldfish Who Played Baseball
Leo dragged his feet through the backyard. Another summer day alone. The other kids were at the pool, but Leo couldn't swim well yet. He sighed and sat beneath the old palm tree, its fronds whispering in the breeze.
Something splashed in the tiny pond nearby.
Leo leaned over. An orange fish with shimmering scales looked up at him.
"You look lonely," said the goldfish.
Leo gasped. "You can talk?"
"I'm Finn. Want to be friends?"
Leo's heart leaped. "Yes!"
Finn did a flip, then grew taller. The goldfish transformed into a boy with orange hair and a golden baseball cap.
"I know somewhere magical," Finn said. "Close your eyes."
Whoosh! They were at a baseball diamond—underwater! Bubbles floated instead of dust. The ball was a pearl, the bat made of coral.
"Your turn," Finn grinned.
Leo swung. SPLOSH! The pearl ball flew through schools of cheering fish. He hit every one.
"You're amazing!" Finn said. "You just needed to believe."
"But I can't play like this at real baseball," Leo said sadly.
Finn squeezed his shoulder. "The magic isn't underwater. It's inside you. You're strong, Leo. You're brave. You're my friend."
Leo blinked—and they were back under the palm tree. Finn was a goldfish again.
"Tomorrow?" Leo asked.
Finn splashed. "Every day."
At the real game, Leo stepped to the plate. He remembered Finn's words: You're brave. He swung—CRACK! A home run!
The kids cheered. "Leo! You're on our team!"
Leo ran toward the palm tree afterward. "Thank you, Finn!"
The goldfish leaped, creating a rainbow splash. True friends, Leo learned, help you find magic you never knew you had.
