The Goldfish Who Pitched Lightning
Leo was the worst baseball player on the team. He always struck out, and his throws landed somewhere in left field. But Leo had a secret friend — a tiny orange goldfish named Fin who lived in a bowl on his nightstand.
Every night before bed, Leo whispered his baseball worries to Fin. The little fish would swim to the surface and blow bubbles that seemed to say, "Tomorrow will be better."
One sweltering afternoon, Leo's team was down by six runs. The championship game. Dark clouds gathered overhead as Leo stepped up to bat. The scoreboard showed two outs, bases loaded.
"You can do this, Leo!" his teammates shouted.
The pitcher wound up and threw the ball. It sailed toward Leo like a shooting star. He closed his eyes and swung — and missed. Strike one.
Then came the lightning. It flashed across the sky in brilliant bolts, and suddenly, Leo's baseball bag began to glow. Out fluttered Fin, who had somehow followed Leo to the game! The goldfish floated in a magical bubble, circling the batter's box.
"Focus, Leo!" Fin seemed to say with a sparkle of light. "Believe in yourself!"
The next pitch came. Leo didn't close his eyes this time. He watched the ball, imagined it was one of Fin's bubbles, and swung with all his might. CRACK! The ball soared higher than anyone had ever seen, past the outfielders, over the fence, into the parking lot.
Home run!
His teammates rushed the field, hugging Leo. But when he looked for Fin, the goldfish was gone — back home in his bowl, perhaps, waiting for tomorrow's game.
That night, Leo whispered to Fin, "You're the best coach ever."
The little fish swam happily, blowing tiny baseball-shaped bubbles. Leo learned something that day: magic exists when you believe in yourself, and sometimes the best friends come in the smallest, fishiest packages.
