The Goldfish Who Never Gave Up

Lily had a secret. Her pet goldfish, Goldie, was a zombie goldfish!

"Don't worry," Lily's grandmother had whispered when she gave her the shimmering orange fish. "'Zombie' just means he never gives up. Look at him swim!"

And Goldie did swim—around and around his tiny castle, even when Lily thought he must be tired. His orange scales flashed like sunset fireworks, and his googly eyes seemed to sparkle with determination.

One afternoon, Lily trudged home from school, her padel racket dragging on the sidewalk.

"What's wrong, little one?" her grandmother asked.

"I can't play in the tournament tomorrow," Lily sighed. "The other kids are so good. They hit the ball so hard, and they run so fast. I'm just going to lose."

That night, Lily sat by Goldie's bowl, watching him swim lap after lap after lap.

"You're a zombie goldfish," she whispered. "You never stop. But I'm going to stop. I'm quitting the tournament."

Goldie swam to the surface and blew a tiny bubble. It popped with a sound like a giggle.

Lily gasped. The bubble had turned into a miniature padel ball! Goldie swam through it, and suddenly the water in his bowl began to glow.

"You're not just a fish," Lily whispered, pressing her nose against the glass. "You're magic!"

Goldie swam in a figure-eight pattern, then pushed his nose against the bowl. In the reflection, Lily saw something amazing—herself, but not just herself. She saw herself hitting the padel ball, running, laughing, and never giving up, no matter how many times she missed.

"You're showing me that being a zombie means being brave," Lily realized. "It means trying even when you're tired. Even when you think you can't win."

The next morning, Lily stood at the padel court, her knees wobbly like jelly. But then she remembered Goldie swimming those endless laps, and she imagined she had a little zombie goldfish magic in her heart.

Her opponent hit the ball hard—so hard it sailed over Lily's head. But Lily didn't give up. She chased it, swinging her racket, and somehow, miraculously, hit it back.

The game went on. Lily missed. She slipped. She even let a few balls bounce past. But she kept playing, kept trying, kept laughing with her friends.

When the game ended, Lily hadn't won the match. But as she walked home, she felt like the biggest champion in the world.

"Grandma!" she called, bursting through the door. "I didn't win, but I didn't give up! I was just like Goldie—a zombie who never stops!"

Her grandmother hugged her. "And that, my darling, is the real magic. Not winning, but never giving up."

That night, Goldie swam his endless laps, his orange scales shimmering like a tiny, determined sunset. And Lily knew that sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is keep swimming, keep playing, and never, ever give up.
