The Goldfish Who Loved Spinach
Lily hated spinach more than anything in the world. Every Tuesday, her mother served the green leafy vegetable for dinner, and every Tuesday, Lily would find an excuse to disappear.
One Tuesday evening, Lily went running out the back door, her bare feet pattering against the grass. She didn't stop until she reached the far corner of their garden, where a small, crystal-clear pool shimmered in the moonlight. Lily had never noticed this pool before, even though she'd played in the backyard a thousand times.
The water was so still it looked like a mirror, reflecting the stars above. Something shiny caught Lily's eye—a flash of gold beneath the surface. Curious, she knelt beside the pool and peered into the depths.
A beautiful goldfish with scales like tiny sunshine coins swam to the surface. Its fins fluttered like silk ribbons in the water.
"Hello there," Lily whispered.
The goldfish blew a perfect bubble that popped right in front of her nose.
"Are you lonely?" Lily asked, forgetting all about running away from dinner.
The goldfish seemed to smile, its mouth opening and closing as if trying to tell her something. Then it did something extraordinary—it jumped out of the water and landed on a mossy stone beside the pool.
Lily gasped. "You can breathe air!"
But the goldfish wasn't talking. It was staring at something in Lily's hand—her pocket, where she'd stuffed a spinach leaf earlier, planning to feed it to the neighbor's cat. Without thinking, Lily pulled out the wilted green leaf.
"You want this? But it's just yucky spinach."
The goldfish's eyes widened with delight. Lily placed the leaf on the stone, and the goldfish nibbled it daintily, as if it were the most delicious treat in the world.
The moment the goldfish swallowed the last bite, something magical happened. The pool began to glow with a soft green light, and the water churned with energy. Lily watched in wonder as the pool transformed into a magnificent underwater kingdom, with towers made of pearl and streets paved with moonlight.
"Thank you," the goldfish said in a voice like tinkling bells. "I am the Guardian of the Pool, and only those who share what they think is worthless can unlock the magic within."
Lily's heart swelled with wonder. She had learned that something she thought was terrible—spinach—could bring magic to someone else. Sometimes, the things we dislike most can be treasures to others.
From that day on, Lily never ran away from spinach again. Instead, she saved a small leaf from each Tuesday dinner and brought it to her friend at the magic pool, where together they discovered that the best magic comes from sharing what you have, even when it doesn't seem like much at all.
