The Goldfish Who Loved Baseball

Leo tossed the baseball high into the air, his glove ready. Behind him, Buster the dog barked excitedly, his tail wagging like a metronome. Leo swung his bat—*whoosh!*—but missed. The ball rolled toward the garden pond.

"Good boy, Buster!" Leo cheered as his golden retriever chased after it. But Buster stopped suddenly at the water's edge.

A tiny orange goldfish popped to the surface. "Hello!" said the goldfish. "I'm Splash! Is that baseball? It looks like fun!"

Leo's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"

"Only during lightning storms," Splash bubbled. "And look—the sky is turning purple!"

*CRACK!* Lightning flashed across the sky. Splash jumped right out of the water and landed on the grass. But instead of flopping like a normal fish, Splash grew legs!

"Teach me baseball!" Splash cried.

Leo couldn't believe it. He handed Splash a tiny glove he used for catching practice. Meanwhile, lightning danced overhead, making Splash shimmer like a living rainbow.

Buster barked happily. The dog, the boy, and the magical goldfish played baseball until the storm passed. Splash turned out to be amazing! Being light and quick, Splash could dart around and catch balls no one else could reach.

As the last lightning bolt faded, Splash grew small again. "Thank you for including me," the goldfish said, sliding back into the pond. "Remember—friendship is the real magic."

Leo and Buster walked home as stars appeared. "That was the best baseball game ever," Leo whispered.

Buster woofed in agreement. From the pond, Splash's tiny voice echoed: "See you next storm!"

Leo smiled. Sometimes the most wonderful friends come from the most unexpected places. And that, he decided, was better than any home run.
