The Goldfish Who Knew Everything
Lily had a secret. Her pet goldfish, Finnegan, wasn't just an ordinary fish. He was a spy. A very small, very orange spy who swam in circles around his bowl and knew things no fish should know.
Every day after school, Lily would sit by Finnegan's bowl and tell him about her day. And Finnegan would listen—really listen—with his googly eyes and tiny mouth that opened and closed like he was whispering secrets back.
"My friend Maya won't play with me anymore," Lily sighed one Tuesday, dropping a pinch of fish food into the bowl. "She says I'm too little."
Finnegan swam to the top of his bowl and did three flips. Then he swam straight down to the bottom and stared at something green that had fallen behind his castle.
Lily reached in and pulled it out. It was a piece of spinach from dinner last night. But this spinach was glowing—just a little bit, like fireflies at twilight.
"Spinach?" Lily laughed. "Why are you hiding glowing spinach?"
Finnegan did another flip, faster this time. Lily held up the spinach leaf and gasped. Through its green glow, she could see tiny letters forming: MAYA NEEDS HELP.
"You're a magic spy fish!" Lily whispered. "And you know about Maya!"
She grabbed her backpack and raced to Maya's house, the glowing spinach lighting her way like a tiny lantern. When she peeked through Maya's window, she saw her friend sitting alone, crying over a broken art project.
Lily knocked softly. "I brought something," she said, holding up the spinach. "Magic spinach. My spy fish sent it."
Maya stopped crying. "Your fish is a spy?"
"The best spy in the whole ocean," Lily grinned. "And he says you need a friend."
Together, they used the glowing spinach to see in the dark garage and find the perfect supplies to fix Maya's project. By midnight, they had built something even better than before—a castle fit for a magical goldfish.
The next day, Lily dropped a special piece of spinach into Finnegan's bowl. It didn't glow, but Finnegan did a happy dance anyway, spinning round and round like a tiny orange confetti.
"Good spy," Lily whispered. "Best friend."
