The Goldfish Who Knew Everything
Seven-year-old Toby had a secret. Every morning at exactly 7:30 AM, after taking his chewy orange vitamin, something magical happened. His pet goldfish, Finley, would swim to the front of the bowl and whisper through the glass.
"Today's important," Finley said one Tuesday. "Bring your iPhone to school."
Toby's eyes widened. Finny had never asked him to bring anything to school before! But he trusted his fishy friend.
At recess, Toby's class gathered for baseball practice. Coach Martinez announced, "Today we pick the team captain for the big game against Maple Elementary!"
Toby's heart sank. He wasn't the best player. In fact, he usually struck out. But something made him raise his hand.
His classmates giggled. "Toby? But he always misses!"
Coach Martinez nodded thoughtfully. "Let's see what happens."
Toby stepped up to the plate, clutching his borrowed bat. His iPhone buzzed in his pocket. Finley's voice whispered through the tiny speaker: "Wait for the curveball. It's coming high and outside. Swing on the drop."
Toby trusted his friend. He watched the pitcher wind up, spotted the ball curving toward him, and swung exactly when Finley said SWING!
CRACK! The ball soared over the fence. A home run!
Everyone gasped. "How did you DO that?" asked his friend Maya.
Toby smiled, thinking of his magical goldfish. "Sometimes," he said wisely, "the best help comes from the smallest friends."
That afternoon, Toby scored three more home runs. His class voted him captain unanimously.
When Toby got home, he fed Finley an extra pinch of flakes. "You knew exactly what to say. How?"
Finley did a happy flip. "Because you believe in me, silly. That's the real magic."
Toby realized something important that day. Success wasn't about being the biggest or strongest. It was about having friends who believed in you, and believing in them right back.
Every morning after that, Toby never forgot his vitamin. And Finley never forgot to believe in him.
