The Goldfish Who Knew Everything

Lily pressed her nose against the cool glass of the fish bowl. She was on a very important mission—to **spy** on her pet goldfish, Bubbles. Mama said Bubbles was just a regular fish, but Lily knew better. Bubbles had secrets.

Every night when the moon glowed through the window, Bubbles would do something extraordinary. Last Tuesday, Lily had seen him blow actual bubbles that spelled out her name in sparkly letters. But Mama had been calling her for dinner, and Lily had missed what happened next.

Tonight, Lily was ready. She held her papaya flashlight—a special flashlight Papa had made for her, painted bright orange like her favorite fruit. The flashlight didn't need batteries. It only worked when you squeezed it and thought happy thoughts.

"Bubbles," Lily whispered. "I know you can hear me."

The goldfish swam to the front of the bowl and winked. Actually winked!

Then something magical happened. Bubbles leaped right out of the water and grew until he was the size of a pillow. His shimmering golden scales glowed like tiny stars.

"You finally noticed!" Bubbles said in a bubbly voice. "I've been waiting for you, Lily. I need your help."

"You can talk?" Lily gasped.

"Of course! I'm not just any fish. I'm a guardian of the Dream Kingdom, and someone has stolen all the sweet dreams. That's why children have been having nightmares."

Lily's heart beat fast. "How can I help?"

"The dream thief loves the smell of **papaya**," Bubbles explained. "If we can find the papaya that grows on the Moon Tree, we can lure him out and save the dreams!"

Bubbles wrapped his fin around Lily's hand, and suddenly they were floating through her bedroom window, soaring among the stars. The moon wasn't just a moon anymore—it was a kingdom made of clouds and moonbeams.

They found the Moon Tree growing from a crater, its leaves shimmering with stardust. Hanging from its branches were papayas that glowed soft pink.

But someone was already there—a shadowy figure stealing papayas!

"That's the dream thief!" Bubbles exclaimed.

Lily had an idea. She squeezed her papaya flashlight and thought of the happiest thing she could imagine: Mama and Papa tucking her in with kisses and stories.

A beam of golden light shot from her flashlight, surrounding the thief. As the light touched him, he transformed—not into a monster, but into a tiny, sad creature.

"I just wanted to have sweet dreams too," the little creature sniffled. "I've never had one."

Lily's heart melted. "Everyone deserves sweet dreams. Would you like to be our friend instead?"

The creature's eyes widened. "Really?"

Bubbles nodded. "Really. And if you help us tend the Moon Tree, you can have as many papayas as you want. They're filled with dream magic."

From that night on, Lily never had nightmares. And whenever she pressed her nose against Bubbles' bowl, he would wink, and she would smile, knowing that somewhere in the Dream Kingdom, a former thief was now the guardian of the sweetest papayas in the universe.

Mama still thought Bubbles was just a regular fish. But Lily knew the truth—the best secrets are the ones you keep with friends.
