The Goldfish Who Flew

Comet was no ordinary goldfish. While other fish swam in lazy circles, Comet spent his days pressed against the glass of his bowl, watching the world beyond the window. His best friend, seven-year-old Maya, had built a pyramid of colorful books beside his bowl. Every afternoon, she would read him stories about pirates, dragons, and faraway lands.

"Someday, Comet," she whispered, tapping the glass. "Someday you'll see the world."

Comet's tiny fins fluttered with excitement. He believed her, because Maya's stories always felt true.

One stormy evening, as Maya was reading about flying fish, a bolt of lightning struck near their window. CRACK! The room filled with golden light. Suddenly, the book pyramid began to glow. The stories inside it were coming alive!

Comet felt something strange—his scales tingled, his bowl shimmered, and then… he wasn't in water anymore. He was floating in the air!

"Maya!" she gasped, dropping her book.

But Comet didn't fall. He swam through the air as if it were water, his golden scales gleaming. He darted around the room, running imaginary races with the wind.

"Come outside!" Maya called, throwing open the window.

Together they raced into the stormy night. Comet swam through raindrops that sparkled like diamonds. Maya ran beneath him, laughing as her hair whipped in the wind. The lightning that had scared them before now painted the sky with magic, each flash turning the clouds into castles, dragons, and whales.

For one perfect hour, a small goldfish and a small girl saw the world from above—trees like emerald broccoli, houses like toy blocks, the whole world swimming with possibility.

As dawn approached, Comet gently swam back to his bowl, now filled with stardust and rainbows. He settled into his usual spot, but everything had changed.

The next day, when Comet swam in his usual circles, he wasn't bored. He was practicing—because even a small fish in a small bowl can have big dreams, and the best adventures are the ones you share with a friend.

Maya placed one more book on the pyramid—this one about a fish who touched the sky. And every time lightning flashed, Comet's scales would glimmer, remembering the night they learned that magic is real, friendship is powerful, and even the smallest dreams can grow larger than pyramids.
