The Goldfish Who Flew

spygoldfishlightningfriend

Lily peered into her fishbowl every night before bed. Her orange goldfish, Bubbles, would always swim to the glass and wiggle his fins. But tonight was different.

A storm raged outside, and lightning flashed across the sky. CRACK! BOOM! Lily's room lit up like daytime. When she looked back at the bowl, Bubbles was floating above the water!

"Are you a spy?" Lily whispered, eyes wide. "Have you been watching me?"

Bubbles didn't answer with words, but his scales began to glow. A beam of light shot from the bowl and wrapped around Lily like a warm hug. Suddenly, she could hear his thoughts!

*Not a spy,* Bubbles said. *A Guardian. I protect dreamers from the Shadow Creeps.*

The lightning struck again, but this time it didn't fade. It danced outside Lily's window, forming the shape of a giant cat with glowing green eyes.

"The Shadow Creeps!" Lily gasped.

*Quick!* Bubbles commanded. *You must believe!*

Lily closed her eyes and imagined Bubbles growing wings—big, shimmering wings like a dragonfly. When she opened them, Bubbles had grown to the size of a beach ball, and beautiful golden wings sprouted from his sides.

*Hop on, friend!* Bubbles said.

Lily climbed onto Bubbles' back, and together they flew through her window. The lightning-cat hissed and swiped at them, but Bubbles dodged with incredible speed. They zoomed through the storm clouds, weaving and spinning until the Shadow Creep dissolved into harmless raindrops.

As they soared back to Lily's room, Bubbles shrank back to his normal size. His glow faded, and Lily could no longer hear his thoughts. But he did something he'd never done before—he blew a perfect heart-shaped bubble.

Lily giggled. "You're not just a goldfish. You're my best friend."

That night, Lily fell asleep with the biggest smile. She knew that whenever lightning flashed, Bubbles would be there—ready for another adventure.
