The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Running
In a cozy blue house lived a little goldfish named Glimmer. She swam in circles all day, watching the world through her glass bowl. But Glimmer had a secret wish. She didn't want to swim. She wanted to run.
Every afternoon, an orange dog named Rusty would trot past the window. His paws went thump-thump-thump on the sidewalk. His golden fur shined like sunshine. Glimmer would press her nose against the glass, her tiny heart pounding. "Oh, how I wish I could run like that!" she would whisper.
One magical morning, something strange happened. An orange from the kitchen table rolled across the floor and bumped right into Glimmer's bowl. The orange was bright and cheerful, with skin like a tiny sun.
"Hello there, little fish!" said the orange, in a voice like sparkling juice. "I'm Pip. I rolled all the way from the fruit bowl because I heard you wishing for something wonderful."
Glimmer's eyes grew wide. "You can talk?"
"I can do more than talk," Pip said mysteriously. "Rub against me, and you'll have your heart's desire for one whole hour. But be careful—magic always has a price."
Glimmer didn't hesitate. She swam to the edge and touched her nose to the orange's skin. Suddenly, her fins disappeared! In their place were four tiny paws. She wasn't a fish anymore—she was a miniature dog!
Glimmer leaped out of her bowl and landed softly on the carpet. She could run! She dashed around the room, her paws going pitter-patter, her tail wagging with joy. She ran under the table, over the rug, and around the chair legs.
Rusty the real dog was outside. When he saw Glimmer, his tail started wagging too. "Hey there, little friend! Want to play?" Glimmer and Rusty ran together in the sunny yard. She chased butterflies. She rolled in grass. She felt the wind in her fur.
But after an hour, Glimmer felt something was wrong. Her skin was dry. She couldn't breathe well. The beautiful world that had seemed so wonderful was now too hot and too bright. She missed her cool, watery home.
Just as she started to feel scared, she was back in her bowl, fins and all. She could breathe again. The water felt like a loving hug.
Outside, Rusty barked happily. "That was fun! You're the fastest little running fish I've ever met!"
Glimmer smiled and swam a happy loop. She had learned something important. It was wonderful to try new things, but it was also wonderful to be exactly who she was.
Pip the orange winked from the floor. "Running is fun, but swimming is magic too."
Glimmer agreed. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones that show you how perfect your own world really is.
