The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Running
Lily's goldfish, Finley, lived in a bubbly glass bowl on her nightstand. He was orange as a sunset, with fins that shimmered like sequins. Every night before bed, Lily pressed her palm against the glass, and Finney would swim over to touch it with his nose.
One moonlit evening, something magical happened. As Lily was drifting off to sleep, she heard a tiny voice.
"Lily! Wake up!"
She rubbed her eyes. There was Finley, floating at the top of his bowl, his tiny fish mouth moving.
"I've been waiting for someone to be my friend," Finley said with a bubbly giggle. "Someone who can help me with my biggest dream."
"What dream?" Lily whispered, amazed.
"Running!" Finley exclaimed. "I want to feel the grass between my toes—I mean, scales! I want to chase the wind!"
Lily's grandmother had told her about the Magic Palm Tree at the end of their street. Its special golden coconuts were filled with something extraordinary— a magical vitamin that could give any creature the power they needed most.
"I know what to do!" Lily cried. She carefully carried Finley's bowl outside and tiptoed down the street until she found the ancient palm tree with shimmering leaves. One golden coconut lay at its base.
The coconut cracked open easily, glowing with warm light. Finley took a tiny sip of the magical liquid.
WHOOSH!
Suddenly, Finley grew two little legs! He hopped out of his bowl and began running around the garden, laughing with pure joy. He ran in circles, he ran in zigzags, he ran until he was dizzy.
"This is wonderful!" Finley cheered. "But Lily, I learned something important. The magic didn't give me my real wish. You did—you were a friend who believed in my impossible dream."
Lily smiled. "And you taught me that friends help each other fly, even when they're goldfish who want to run."
They walked home together, Finley waddling happily beside her. From that night on, Finley could choose between swimming and running. But his favorite thing was still pressing his nose against Lily's palm each night—because friendship was the greatest magic of all.
