The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Running

Lily loved watching her orange goldfish, Norman, swim circles in his bowl. But Norman seemed sad. He pressed his nose against the glass, staring longingly at children running through the park outside Lily's window.

One evening, as an orange sunset painted the sky, Norman spoke. "I wish I could run like those children."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"Only when I really need to," Norman bubbled. "Fish are supposed to swim, but I've always dreamed of running. Do you think I could ever try?"

Lily's heart melted. Everyone deserved to chase their dreams, even goldfish. That night, during a terrible lightning storm, she made a wish on every flash that illuminated her room.

Suddenly, magic sparkles filled the air! Norman's bowl glowed orange, and suddenly a tiny fish with legs stood before her.

"I can run!" Norman cheered, darting around Lily's room on two little fin-feet.

They played tag, hide-and-seek, and even raced toy cars. But as the storm passed, Norman grew tired. "Running is wonderful," he panted, "but I think I belong in the water."

Lily nodded sadly. Norman splashed back into his bowl, legs disappearing. But he wasn't sad anymore.

"I tried something impossible," Norman told Lily. "That's better than never trying at all."

The next morning, Norman swam faster than ever, creating little currents that made his orange scales flash like lightning. Sometimes, Lily thought she saw tiny splashes that looked like footsteps.

"What did you learn?" Lily's mother asked later.

"That dreams come in all shapes," Lily said, watching Norman swim. "And that trying something new—succeed or fail—is always worth it."

Norman swam a happy circle. Sometimes the best adventures aren't about changing who you are, but about discovering all the amazing things you can do—even if you're just a goldfish with a running dream.
