The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Running

Finley was no ordinary goldfish. While his friends in the pet store were happy swimming in circles, Finley spent his days pressed against the glass, watching children run past the window. Their feet thumped against the sidewalk. Their laughter floated through the air. And Finley dreamed—goldfish dreams are quiet things—of what it would feel like to run.

One Tuesday, something magical happened. A girl named Lily bought Finley and carried him home in a plastic bag filled with water. She placed his bowl on a shelf overlooking the backyard, where a sparkling blue pool waited.

"Hello, Finley," she whispered each morning. "Today's the day."

Finley didn't understand what she meant until the night of the full moon. Lily lifted his bowl gently and carried it outside to the pool's edge. The water glowed with silver light.

"Make a wish," she said, closing her eyes.

Finley wished harder than any goldfish had ever wished before. He wished to feel grass beneath his fins. He wished to run free.

Suddenly, the pool began to shimmer. Water rose up, forming a sparkling bridge. And Finley—impossibly—found himself swimming through air, turning into something new. Fins became feet. Scales became skin.

He was running!

Lily cheered and ran beside him, and they raced around the pool under the moonlight, the most unlikely friends in the world. They ran until Finley was tired and Lily was breathless and the moon had traveled halfway across the sky.

As dawn approached, Finley knew it was time to return. He splashed back into his bowl, a goldfish once more. But something had changed. His bowl felt bigger somehow. His dreams felt closer.

Lily placed him back on his shelf and pressed a finger to the glass. "Same time next month?"

Finley swam a happy circle. He couldn't wait. Being a goldfish was wonderful—but running under the moonlight with a friend was magic pure and simple.

And somewhere in the space between dreams and morning, Finley understood something important: The best wishes are the ones you share, and the impossible becomes possible when you have a friend who believes in your dreams.
