The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Running

Lily was chasing fireflies in her backyard when she spotted something shimmering in the old birdbath. A tiny goldfish was swimming in circles, splashing water onto the daisies.

"Hello there!" Lily whispered, kneeling beside the birdbath. "How did you get here?"

The goldfish swam closer and popped its head above water. "I'm Finnegan," the fish said in a bubbly voice. "And I have a secret wish."

Lily's eyes grew wide. A talking fish! This was better than any fairy tale.

"What's your secret wish?" she asked.

Finnegan's golden scales sparkled under the moonlight. "I dream of running through the meadow, feeling the grass between my toes, and chasing butterflies. But fish don't have toes or legs."

Lily's heart swelled with compassion. She remembered how she had felt when she was too small to reach the cookie jar. Everyone deserved to chase their dreams, even fish.

"I have an idea!" Lily exclaimed. She found her red wagon and carefully placed Finnegan in a glass jar filled with water. "Hold on tight!"

She pulled the wagon faster and faster, running across the grass, around the oak tree, and through the vegetable garden. The wind rushed past them. Fireflies danced around the jar like tiny lanterns.

"I'm running!" Finnegan cheered, his fins wiggling with joy. "I'm actually running!"

When Lily finally stopped, both of them were giggling. Then she remembered something important. "You must be hungry from all that running."

She ran to the garden and plucked a handful of fresh green spinach leaves. "My mom says spinach gives you super strength. Maybe it'll help you swim faster too."

Finnegan nibbled the spinach through the water. "Delicious! I feel stronger already. Thank you, Lily. You're the best friend a fish could ever have."

That night, Lily returned Finnegan to his pond, but every evening afterward, she would take him on a new adventure. They raced through autumn leaves, sledded down snowy hills, and flew kites in spring breezes.

And somewhere in that pond, Finnegan still dreams of running. But now he knows that with a good friend, even impossible dreams can come true.
