The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Oceans

Barnaby was a small orange goldfish who lived in a glass bowl on a high shelf. But Barnaby had a big dream. He wanted to see the ocean.

Every day, he watched through the glass as his best friend, a golden retriever named Sunny, trotted around the house. Sunny would jump up and rest her chin on the shelf, her tail wagging like a metronome.

"Someday," Sunny would bark softly, "you'll see the big water outside. The water that goes on forever."

One rainy afternoon, their owner Emma left something new near the fishbowl—a long, thick cable that snaked across the floor and disappeared through a slightly open window. Raindrops drummed against the glass, and Barnaby had an idea.

"Sunny!" Barnaby bubbled. "That cable could help us!"

Sunny understood immediately. Being a good friend meant helping dreams come true. She carefully nudged Barnaby's bowl onto the cable, which acted like a slide down to the floor. Then, ever so gently, she pushed the bowl across the room on its magical slide, right to the back door.

Outside, rain had created streams of water rushing down the driveway. Sunny lifted Barnaby's bowl and poured him into the biggest puddle she could find.

For the first time in his life, Barnaby felt rain on his scales. He swam in circles, then jumped—a tiny, graceful leap! He splashed back down, feeling wild and free.

"This is wonderful!" Barnaby cheered. "But Sunny, you know what I learned?"

Sunny tilted her head.

"The ocean is wonderful, but my favorite water is the one where you can visit me every day. Being with my friend is better than any adventure."

Sunny licked Barnaby's bowl dry and carried him back to his shelf. From then on, Barnaby still dreamed of oceans, but he knew the best treasure wasn't finding new places—it was having a friend who believed in your dreams enough to help make them come true, even just for one rainy afternoon.
