The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Flying
Lily was running through her grandmother's garden when something extraordinary happened. She had been chasing a beautiful orange butterfly, her bare feet pattering softly against the warm grass, when she spotted something amazing.
Beside the small pond, a tiny goldfish named Finn was swimming frantically in circles. But this wasn't ordinary swimming – Finn was leaping out of the water, over and over, as if practicing something.
"What are you doing?" Lily asked, kneeling beside the pond.
Finn popped his head above water. "I'm practicing!" he squeaked. "I want to fly like the birds."
Lily giggled. "But you're a fish! Fish don't fly."
"Nobody told the bull that," Finn said mysteriously, pointing with his tail toward the old palm tree at the garden's edge.
Lily turned and gasped. There, curled up in the palm tree's branches, was the grumpy old bull from the farm next door. But he wasn't grumpy anymore – his eyes were closed peacefully, and he seemed to be floating slightly above the branch.
"He's dreaming," Lily whispered.
"Exactly!" Finn swirled excitedly. "When you dream big enough, anything can happen. The bull believes he can fly in his dreams, so he does. I want that too."
Lily thought about this. She had always been afraid to try new things, afraid she wasn't good enough. But here was a tiny fish dreaming impossible dreams.
"Maybe," Lily said slowly, "we could help each other. I'll help you practice your jumping, and you can help me be brave."
For weeks, they worked together. Lily helped Finn jump higher and higher, and Finn encouraged Lily to try swimming, climb trees, and even sing in front of her class.
One sunny morning, something magical happened. Finn jumped higher than ever before – and caught a breeze! For a few glorious seconds, the little goldfish was actually flying, his golden scales shimmering in the sunlight.
Lily cheered so loudly that she woke the bull, who blinked sleepily and smiled at them.
"Dream big," he rumbled wisely.
That day, Lily learned that courage doesn't mean you aren't scared. It means being scared and trying anyway. And sometimes, the most impossible dreams come true – especially when you have friends who believe in you.
