The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Being a Bull

In the corner of Mr. Higgins' garden pond lived Gilbert, a tiny goldfish with enormous dreams. While other fish chased flakes and napped in lily pads, Gilbert spent his days watching Barnaby, the massive brown bull who grazed in the nearby pasture.

"Look at him!" Gilbert would bubble to his fish friends. "He's so big and strong! He can stomp his hooves and make the ground tremble. I wish I could be a bull instead of a fish."

One rainy afternoon, something extraordinary happened. A spinach leaf—bright green and shimmering with an inner light—floated down from the garden above and landed in the pond. Gilbert nibbled at it, and suddenly he felt strange. Very strange. His scales grew hard and thick, his tail became a tuft, and he sprouted four mighty legs!

Gilbert had become a bull! A very small, very confused bull, but a bull nonetheless.

He climbed out of the pond and marched to the pasture. Barnaby lowered his massive head, sniffing the tiny newcomer. "Well now," the bull rumbled, "what have we here? You're a mighty small bull, aren't you?"

"I'm Gilbert!" he announced proudly. "I'm big and strong like you!"

But being a bull wasn't as wonderful as Gilbert imagined. The grass tasted like nothing. The sun felt too hot on his now-dry skin. He missed the cool water and his fish friends.

Barnaby noticed Gilbert's sadness. "You know, little one," said the bull gently, "being big isn't what makes someone strong. I've seen fish like you leap twice your height to catch flies. That's true strength—using exactly what you have."

That evening, the magical spinach wore off. Gilbert splashed back into his pond, feeling relieved to be home. He swam faster than ever before, doing loops and leaps that dazzled the other fish.

"You're amazing!" they cheered. "How did you get so strong?"

Gilbert smiled, a secret smile only he understood. "A friend taught me something important," he said. "The strongest fish in the pond isn't the one who wishes to be a bull. It's the one who loves being exactly who they are."

From that day on, Gilbert was the happiest, proudest goldfish in Mr. Higgins' pond—and that made him the strongest fish of all.
