The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Baseball

Leo had a goldfish named Finn who lived in a crystal bowl on his nightstand. But Finn wasn't like other goldfish. Every afternoon, Leo would sit by his window watching the neighborhood kids play baseball in the park across the street. Finn would swim to the side of his bowl closest to the window, his tiny mouth opening and closing as if cheering invisible players.

"You want to play too, don't you?" Leo whispered one summer evening.

Finn did a happy flip, sending sparkles through his blue-green scales.

That night, something magical happened. Leo's cat, Whiskers, a fluffy orange tabby who usually spent her days sleeping in sunbeams, jumped onto the nightstand. Instead of trying to catch Finn like most cats would, Whiskers gently tapped the glass bowl with her soft white paw.

"I can help," the cat seemed to say with wise golden eyes.

Leo gasped. "You can talk?"

Whiskers nodded. "Only on special nights. Tonight is for dreams."

The cat touched her nose to the bowl, and suddenly Finn began to glow. The water swirled like a tiny tornado, lifting Finn right out of his bowl! But he didn't flop on the desk—instead, magical bubbles formed around him, creating a perfect fish-sized spacesuit.

"To the park!" Whiskers meowed.

They crept out the window, Finn floating beside them in his bubble suit. The empty baseball diamond shimmered under moonlight. Fireflies danced around them like tiny stadium lights.

"I'll pitch!" Whiskers said, standing on her hind legs like a person.

Finn swam through his bubble toward home plate, growing larger until he was the size of a real baseball. Whiskers wound up and threw a perfect pitch. Finn spun through the air, trailing magical sparkles like a shooting star with fins. When he reached the bat Leo had placed there, he made a gentle *bloop* sound and bounced toward first base.

"Safe!" cried the fireflies.

They played until dawn, Finn flying through the starry sky, Whiskers running bases with elegant leaps, and Leo cheering them on. The crickets provided the music.

As the sun began to rise, they tumbled back into Leo's room. Finn shrank back to his normal size and settled into his bowl, looking happier than ever. Whiskers curled up at the foot of Leo's bed, already purring in her sleep.

Leo woke his mom the next morning. "Mom, I had the most amazing dream!"

But when he looked at his nightstand, there was something new beside Finn's bowl—a tiny baseball made of real seashells.

Leo smiled. Some dreams are real, if you have the right friends.
