The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Baseball
Lily was running through her backyard on a warm summer afternoon, her red sneakers thumping against the grass. She skidded to a stop beside the small pond where her best friend, a tiny orange goldfish named Finn, swam in lazy circles.
"Hello, Finn!" Lily whispered, leaning over the water's edge. Finn always swam to the surface when she visited, his golden scales shimmering like tiny underwater stars.
But today, Finn didn't come up. Lily frowned and peered deeper into the pond. What she saw made her gasp.
Finn wasn't just swimming—he was playing! The little goldfish was pushing a pebble across the pond bottom with his nose, dodging around water plants like a player dodging around bases. He'd stop, wiggle his tail excitedly, then push the pebble again from the other direction.
"Are you... are you playing baseball?" Lily giggled.
Finn popped to the surface, blowing a perfect bubble that looked just like a baseball. It floated up, up, up—then POP!
"You want to play!" Lily realized.
She grabbed her plastic baseball from the grass and knelt by the pond. "I'll roll it gently along the edge. You swim underneath and try to keep up! Ready? Finn?"
The goldfish darted excitedly. Lily rolled the bright yellow ball, and奇迹 (miracle) of miracles—Finn swam right beside it, matching its speed perfectly! Back and forth they went, the girl and the fish, playing the strangest, most wonderful game ever.
Finn's friend (the butterfly who often visited the garden) fluttered down to watch, landing on a nearby flower to cheer them on.
"Nobody will believe this," Lily laughed, rolling the ball again. "A goldfish who loves baseball!"
But that's the thing about friendship, she realized—it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. What matters is finding magic in unexpected places and being brave enough to enjoy it.
Finn swam to the surface one last time, blew another baseball bubble, and did a happy little flip before sinking back into his watery home.
"Same time tomorrow, buddy?" Lily called.
The goldfish's golden tail flashed beneath the water. It was definitely a yes.
