The Goldfish Who Dreamed of Baseball

Max's dog, Barnaby, flopped onto the grass with a sigh. The golden retriever watched sadly as Max threw his baseball into the air and caught it again and again.

"What's wrong, Barnaby?" Max asked, scratching behind his ears.

Barnaby whined and looked toward the fishbowl on the porch.

"Oh! You want Goldie to play too?" Max laughed. "But she's a fish!"

Goldie, his tiny orange goldfish, swam to the edge of her bowl and bubbled something that sounded suspiciously like, "I can too!"

Max's eyes went wide. "Did you just... speak?"

Goldie jumped right out of her bowl! But instead of flopping on the ground like a regular fish, she swam through the air as if it were water. Her scales shimmered with rainbow light as she grew bigger and bigger—until she was the size of a beach ball!

"I've been practicing," Goldie said with a wink. "Throw me the ball!"

Max tossed the baseball. Goldie's fins transformed into hands, and she caught it easily. Then she did a backflip in the air and threw it back—perfect pitch!

Barnaby barked happily and chased after it, his tail wagging so hard his whole body wiggled.

"Want to play too?" Goldie asked Barnaby. She tapped his nose with a fin, and suddenly Barnaby could understand fish language!

From that day on, the three of them played baseball every sunset. Goldie swam through the air as the best pitcher anyone had ever seen. Max was the batter, and Barnaby was the outfield—he loved chasing balls and bringing them back in his mouth.

The other kids in the neighborhood couldn't see Goldie's magic. They just saw Max playing catch with his dog, talking to his fishbowl. Some of them laughed.

"Don't listen to them," Goldie told Max privately. "The best friends aren't always the ones you can explain to others. Sometimes magic is real, even if grown-ups forget it exists."

Max smiled, hugging his dog while Goldie swam happy circles around them both. Some friends have fur. Some have fins. The best friends are the ones who believe in your dreams—even the impossible ones.
