The Goldfish Who Could Talk
Maya hated spinach. Every night at dinner, she would push the green leaves around her plate, wishing they would disappear.
"It gives you strong muscles," her mama always said.
Maya didn't want strong muscles. She wanted adventures.
One rainy afternoon, Maya was playing in her room when lightning flashed outside. BOOM! Thunder rattled the window. Suddenly, her pet goldfish, Finbar, swam to the front of his bowl and spoke.
"Maya! I need your help!"
Maya fell off her bed. "You can talk?!"
"Only during lightning storms," Finbar said, his orange scales glowing. "I'm actually a sphinx in disguise, cursed by a jealous wizard. I need someone to help me break the spell."
"A sphinx? Like the magical creature with riddles?" Maya's eyes went wide.
"Exactly! But first, you must be my spy. Tonight at midnight, the wizard's cat will come to steal my magic. You have to catch him in the act!"
Maya nodded bravely. "I'll do it!"
That night, Maya hid behind her bedroom curtains, watching Finbar's bowl like a tiny spy. Clocks chimed midnight. A shadow crept through the window—a sleek black cat with glowing green eyes.
The cat reached for Finbar's bowl.
"Gotcha!" Maya jumped out and flipped on the lights.
The cat froze. Then it transformed into a small wizard with a pointy hat.
"Very clever," the wizard said. "You've broken my spell with your courage."
He waved his wand, and Finbar's bowl transformed into a tiny golden sphinx.
"Thank you, Maya!" Finbar said. "You were brave when it mattered."
"I was scared," Maya admitted.
"Being brave doesn't mean you're not scared," the sphinx said. "It means doing what's right even when you ARE scared."
At dinner the next night, Maya ate all her spinach without complaining.
"What changed?" her mama asked surprised.
Maya smiled secretly. "I'm building my muscles for my next adventure."
