The Goldfish Who Could Spy

Lily was eight years old and had a secret. In her fish tank lived a tiny orange goldfish named Finnegan, but he wasn't an ordinary goldfish. He could spy on things happening outside his bowl, and he would tell Lily everything he saw.

Every day after school, Lily would press her nose against the glass and whisper, "What did you see today, Finnegan?" The goldfish would swim to the front of his tank and make funny faces — bubbles, wiggles, and splashes that told her stories about the world.

One sunny afternoon, Finnegan seemed very excited. He swam in circles and made dramatic splashes, then swam to the window. Lily followed his gaze and saw her new neighbor, a quiet boy named Max, sitting alone on his front porch.

"You want me to say hello?" Lily asked. Finnegan did a happy flip — splash! — and Lily giggled. She wasn't sure about talking to someone she didn't know, but if Finnegan the spying goldfish thought it was a good idea, maybe she should try.

Walking over to Max's house felt like swimming through deep water — a little scary, but also exciting. "Hi," Lily said softly. "I'm Lily. Do you like goldfish?"

Max looked up, surprised. "I have goldfish too! His name is Bubbles."

For the next hour, Lily and Max talked about their fish, school, and how much they both loved chocolate ice cream. When it was time to go home, Max smiled and said, "Thanks for coming over. I was hoping for a friend."

That night, Lily whispered to Finnegan, "You were right. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is say hello to someone who needs a friend." The goldfish did a slow, graceful swim around his bowl, as if to say, "That's what I've been trying to tell you all along."

From that day on, Finnegan didn't just spy on things anymore. He helped make them happen — one friendship at a time.
