The Goldfish Who Could Run
Fin was no ordinary goldfish. While other fish swam in lazy circles, Fin pressed his orange nose against the glass of his bowl, watching the world outside.
From his spot on the table under the swaying palm tree, Fin watched Mia play padel every afternoon. The ball bounced—thwack, thwack, thwack—and Mia ran across the court, her ponytail flying behind her.
"Oh, how I wish I could run," Fin bubbled.
Barnaby, Mia's fluffy golden dog, always rested in the palm tree's shade after their games. One day, he trotted over to Fin's bowl and wagged his tail.
"I heard you wish you could run, little fish," Barnaby said.
Fin's scales shimmered with surprise. "You can talk?"
"Animals can talk to those who listen with their heart," Barnaby winked. "And I know some magic."
The next afternoon, Barnaby gently nudged Fin's bowl toward the padel court while Mia was inside. With a sparkly burst of magic—POOF!—Fin found himself not inside his bowl, but as a fish with shiny orange legs!
"I'm running! I'm really running!" Fin cheered, zooming around the padel court. The sun felt warm on his scales. The grass tickled his new feet. The palm leaves clapped their approval above him.
Mia rushed outside. "Fin! Barnaby!" she gasped, then her eyes widened with wonder. "You're... running?"
For one magical hour, they played together—Fin running with the padel ball, Barnaby barking with joy, Mia laughing until her sides hurt.
As sunset painted the sky pink, Fin's legs began to fade. "My magic is ending," he said softly.
Barnaby nudged him back to his bowl just in time. Fin swam in happy circles, his heart full.
Every day after school, Mia and Barnaby visited Fin, telling stories of their adventures. And sometimes, in the golden light of afternoon, Fin could almost feel the grass beneath his fins again.
"Friends," Fin learned, "are the real magic. They help your dreams come true, even when you're just a small fish in a big world."
