The Goldfish Who Could Run

runninggoldfishzombie

Leo's goldfish, Finbar, spent most days floating sideways near the top of his bowl. Leo's big sister called him a zombie fish.

"He's not a zombie!" Leo would say, sprinkling fish food into the water. "He's just... thoughtful."

But Leo worried. What if Finbar was lonely? What if he was bored with nothing but a plastic castle and blue gravel?

One night, Leo woke to hear splashing sounds from the living room. He tiptoed downstairs and gasped. Finbar was out of his bowl, streaking across the floor like a tiny orange comet! The fish was running—actually running—on two little fins that looked like tiny legs!

"Finbar?" Leo whispered.

The goldfish skidded to a stop and looked up with big, surprised eyes. "Oh! Hello, Leo. You're supposed to be asleep."

"You can talk? And run?"

"Only at midnight," Finbar said proudly. "When the house sleeps, I come alive. I run through the neighborhood, see my fish friends, and have adventures. Last week I helped a ladybug cross the sidewalk."

Leo's eyes widened. "That's amazing! Can I come?"

Finbar thought for a moment. "Tonight we're having a race around the block with the neighbor's catfish. He thinks he's fast, but I've been practicing my running. Want to come along?"

Leo nodded, grinning.

Together they ran through the quiet streets under moonlight—Leo in his pajamas, Finbar zooming beside him on magical fins. They met other nighttime fish creatures, all racing toward the old oak tree at the end of the street. The catfish looked strong, but Finbar had heart.

"On your mark, get set, GO!"

Finbar zipped forward like a little orange rocket. Leo cheered as his friend sprinted past flowers and mailboxes, determination in every splash. Finbar crossed the finish line first!

"I knew you weren't a zombie fish," Leo said, lifting his friend in celebration. "You're the most magical fish ever."

Finbar smiled—a fishy, wonderful smile. "I'm not a zombie, Leo. I'm just enchanted. And having a friend who believes in me makes me even faster."

From then on, Leo never worried about his sideways-floating fish. He knew that every night, Finbar was running somewhere wonderful, bringing magic and joy to the sleeping world.

And sometimes, if Leo stayed awake very quietly, he could join him.
