The Goldfish Who Could Run
Lily loved spending summer days at her grandmother's house, especially the old swimming pool in the backyard. But this summer, something magical happened.
One hot afternoon, Lily was running around the pool when she noticed something strange. A small orange goldfish was swimming near the surface, but it wasn't just any goldfish. This goldfish seemed to be... winking at her!
"Hello there!" said a tiny voice.
Lily rubbed her eyes. "Did you just speak?"
"I did!" said the goldfish, popping its head above the water. "I'm Finnegan, and I'm the only goldfish who can run! Watch this!"
With a splash, Finnegan leaped out of the pool and started running around the edge on two tiny fins! Lily gasped with delight.
"That's amazing!" she cried. "But why can you run when other fish can't?"
Finnegan smiled. "Because I believe I can. And because someone believed in me first."
He pointed toward the tall palm tree that shaded the pool. In its palm fronds sat an old turtle, watching them with wise eyes.
"That's Tully," Finnegan explained. "When I was just a baby fish, he told me I could do anything if I practiced. So I practiced running every single day. Now I can race any lizard!"
Lily's eyes widened. "Really?"
"Really! Would you like to see?"
For the rest of the summer, Lily and Finnegan became best friends. They had races around the pool (he usually won), played hide-and-seek among the palm trees, and Tully the turtle told them stories about the magic of believing in yourself.
One day, Lily looked at Finnegan and said, "I wish I could do something special like you."
Finnegan nudged her hand. "You can! What's something you've always wanted to do?"
Lily thought for a moment. "I've always wanted to learn to swim perfectly, but I'm afraid."
Finnegan grinned. "Then let's practice together! Every day. Just like I learned to run."
And that's what they did. By summer's end, Lily could swim beautifully, and Finnegan could run faster than ever. They learned that with practice and friendship, anything is possible.
Even a goldfish can run, if he believes he can.
