The Goldfish Who Could Fly
Lily pressed her palm against the cool glass of her fishbowl. "Goodnight, Finnegan," she whispered to her orange goldfish. But that night, something magical happened.
Lily woke to hear splashing sounds. She grabbed her spy glasses—really just an old pair of binoculars—and peeked around the door frame. There was Finnegan, swimming through the air like he was underwater! His golden scales sparkled as he did loop-de-loops around her lamp.
Lily gasped. "A flying fish!"
Finnegan froze. "You're supposed to be asleep!" he squeaked in a tiny voice.
"You can talk?" Lily's eyes went wide.
"And fly," Finnegan said proudly. "I'm not a regular goldfish. I'm a Moonfish Scout from the magical waters of Palm Tree Lagoon."
"Palm Tree Lagoon?"
Finnegan swam to the window. "Come with me. I'll show you."
Lily climbed onto his back—surprisingly dry—and they soared out the window, swimming through the starlit sky. Below, her backyard transformed. The small palm tree by the fence grew enormous, its fronds glowing like green lanterns.
They landed beside the tree, and suddenly they were underwater, yet Lily could breathe perfectly. Around her, fish of every color swam between palm trees that grew from the ocean floor.
"Welcome to my world," Finnegan said. "I was sent to be your friend. You've been lonely since moving here, haven't you?"
Lily nodded. "I don't know anyone yet."
A school of silver fish swam by, each carrying a glowing pearl. "These are memory bubbles," Finnegan explained. "When you make real friends, they glow brighter."
Lily understood. The magic wasn't about flying fish or secret worlds. It was about not being alone.
"Will you come back?" Finnegan asked as they returned to her room.
"Every night," Lily promised. "But tomorrow, I'm going to talk to the girl next door. I saw her drawing in her window. Maybe she likes magical stories too."
Finnegan did a happy flip. "Now you're being the spy—finding friends in unexpected places!"
Lily pressed her palm to the glass one last time. "Goodnight, best friend."
As she drifted to sleep, she couldn't wait for tomorrow—and for all the adventures still to come.
