The Goldfish Who Could Fly

Lily loved to spy on the magic in her backyard. Every evening after school, she would hide behind the old oak tree and watch the fireflies dance. But one stormy afternoon, she saw something extraordinary.

Her little brother's goldfish bowl sat on the porch table, and inside swam Goldie – the most ordinary-looking goldfish in the world. But when lightning flashed across the dark sky, something magical happened. Goldie began to glow!

Lily crept closer, her heart pounding with excitement. Goldie swam faster and faster around the bowl, creating tiny whirlpools in the water. With each lightning strike, the goldfish shone brighter.

"Come out, Lily," said a tiny voice. "I know you're there!"

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"Only during storms," Goldie said, doing a happy flip. "Lightning gives me magic powers for one hour. Want to see something amazing?"

Goldie leaped right out of the water! But instead of flopping on the porch, tiny sparkling wings appeared on her sides. She flew around Lily's head, leaving a trail of sparkles like miniature stars.

"I've always wanted to see the world beyond my bowl," Goldie said. "Will you be my adventure friend?"

Lily grinned. "Yes! But first, let's get you some water in a jar so you don't dry out."

Together, they flew around the garden. Goldie showed Lily the secret lives of garden gnomes, the hidden door inside the hollow tree, and the family of fairies who painted flowers at night.

"Being a spy for magic is the best job ever," Lily whispered.

All too soon, the lightning stopped. Goldie's wings faded and she needed to return to her bowl.

"Thank you for the adventure, Lily," Goldie said, swimming happily. "The best magic is having a friend who believes in impossible things."

Lily smiled, watching her goldfish friend swim in lazy circles. Sometimes the most amazing discoveries are hiding in the most ordinary places – you just need to know where to look.
