The Goldfish Who Caught Lightning
Ten-year-old Maya stared at her goldfish, Gilbert, who swam in lazy circles in his bowl. He looked ordinary—orange scales, googly eyes, flowing tail—but Maya knew better.
"You're magical, aren't you?" she whispered, dropping a flake of food into his bowl. Gilbert did a happy flip.
Tomorrow was the big baseball game, and Maya was nervous. She'd never hit a home run before. What if she struck out? What if everyone laughed?
That evening, she borrowed her mom's iPhone to practice swinging in the backyard. She positioned the phone to record herself, stood at home plate, and—CRACK!
A perfect hit! But just as the ball soared through the air, a strange tingling filled the air. The sky purpled. Storm clouds gathered impossibly fast.
Then it happened—lightning struck the baseball field's old metal backstop with a thunderous BOOM!
Maya ducked, covering her head. When she looked up, the air shimmered with tiny golden sparks, like glitter falling through sunlight. And there, hovering above her phone screen, was Gilbert—floating outside his bowl, glowing with soft orange light!
"Maya!" Gilbert said in a bubbly voice. "The lightning woke up my magic!"
Maya gasped. "You can TALK?"
"Only during lightning storms," Gilbert bubbled. "And only for someone who truly believes. Want to know a secret?"
Gilbert swam through the air, trailing sparkles. "You don't need magic to hit a home run. You just need to believe in yourself. The magic was inside you all along!"
Maya felt warm inside. "Really?"
"Really!" Gilbert did a spiral. "Now, make a wish!"
Maya closed her eyes. "I wish for courage."
The golden sparks swirled around her, filling her with warmth. Gilbert glowed brighter than ever.
"Believe, Maya! You're braver than you know!"
The next day at the baseball game, Maya stepped up to the plate. She remembered Gilbert's words. She breathed in, imagined golden sparkles around her, and—SWING!
The ball sailed through the air... over the fence... HOME RUN!
That night, Maya fed Gilbert an extra treat. He did three happy flips.
"Thank you, Gilbert," she whispered.
Gilbert just smiled his fishy smile, his scales shimmering with secret magic.
And somewhere inside, Maya knew: every time lightning flashed, her friend would be there, ready to remind her that believing in yourself is the greatest magic of all.
