The Goldfish Who Caught Lightning

Lily's backyard pool was her favorite place. But her favorite part wasn't the cool water or the colorful floaties — it was Finnegan, the tiny orange goldfish who swam in circles around the pool's edge. Finnegan wasn't an ordinary goldfish. His scales sparkled like tiny stars, and he always seemed to be watching the sky.

One summer afternoon, dark clouds gathered overhead. Thunder rumbled like a giant's tummy. Lily sat by the pool, her knees pulled to her chest. She hated storms.

Finnegan swam to her side and splashed gently. Lightning flashed across the sky — crack! boom! — and Lily covered her eyes.

But Finnegan did something amazing. He leaped from the water, his mouth open wide, and CAUGHT a bolt of lightning in his mouth! The terrifying flash became a soft, golden glow that traveled down his throat and settled in his belly like a warm little sun.

Lily gasped. Finnegan's scales began to shine brighter than ever. He swam around the pool, leaving trails of sparkles wherever he went. The scary lightning was now beautiful magic.

Finnegan kept catching more lightning bolts — zap! swoosh! glow! — until the whole pool was shimmering with gentle golden light. What had been frightening was now the most wonderful thing Lily had ever seen.

When the storm passed, Finnegan swam to Lily's side and nudged her hand. His belly still glowed softly with the captured light.

"You're not scared anymore, are you?" he seemed to say with his sparkling eyes.

Lily reached into the water and touched his smooth scales. "No," she whispered. "Because now I know that even scary things can become something magical if you're brave enough to face them."

From that day on, Lily never feared storms. She knew Finnegan would be there, ready to turn frightening lightning into beautiful light. And whenever she looked at the pool, she remembered: sometimes the scariest things hide the most wonderful magic inside them.

The end.
