The Goldfish Theory

Maya stood at the edge of Jenna's pool, clutching her towel like a lifeline. The social pyramid at Hamilton High had placed Jenna firmly at the top, and somehow, Maya had scored an invite to her legendary summer pool party.

"You gonna swim or just stand there looking like a lost goldfish?"

Maya jumped. It was Liam, the guy from her bio class who always wore those oversized hoodies. He was already waist-deep in the water, grinning at her.

"I'm, uh, thinking about it," Maya managed, though her heart was hammering like she'd just finished a 5K.

"The water's fine. Unless you're scared of getting wet?" He splashed water at her, and that was it—game on.

But as Maya slipped into the pool, something weird happened. All those worries about whether her swimsuit was basic, if she should've worn more makeup, if she'd say something awkward—it all melted away. She found herself swimming laps with Liam, then challenging him to underwater races, then doing that stupid chicken fight thing where people sit on each other's shoulders.

By the time the sun started dipping, Maya was splashing Jenna herself, and Jenna was actually laughing. The so-called social pyramid didn't feel so pyramid-y anymore. It was just... people.

"Hey," Jenna said later, when they were both drying off on patio chairs. "You're actually pretty cool. We should hang at the mall tomorrow."

Maya couldn't stop smiling all the way home. She'd spent the whole day feeling like that goldfish in the bowl at the dentist's office—swimming in circles, going nowhere. But it turned out goldfish weren't trapped. They were just in their element, and everyone else was just watching from the outside.

Her phone buzzed. A text from Liam: "same time next week? 🐟"

Maya typed back: "you're on 😏"

The goldfish theory was real: sometimes you had to just dive in to realize you could swim all along.
