The Goldfish Summer
Max's eyes water behind his sunglasses, but he wasn't about to let anyone see. The neighborhood pool party was packed, and somewhere in the chaos was Skylar—the girl who'd sat behind him in bio since September, the one he'd been lowkey obsessing over since she'd complimented his answer about mitochondrial respiration. Max tugged his baseball cap lower, like that would somehow make him invisible.
"You're full of bull, Max," his best friend Darius laughed, shoving his shoulder. "You've been talking about asking her out since winter break. Just do it already."
"Easy for you to say," Max muttered, watching Skylar float on a neon pink flamingo inflatable. "You didn't accidentally kill your sister's goldfish and then spend three weeks thinking it meant you were emotionally unavailable for relationships."
Darius snorted so hard water from hisSprite sprayed everywhere. "That was literally a PET goldfish, Max. Not a sign from the universe. And may I remind you, you were seven?"
Max's pocket buzzed. His mom, again—probably calling to remind him to take his vitamin D gummies because apparently she'd suddenly decided teenagers couldn't be trusted to remember basic nutrition. He silenced it, heart pounding.
"She's coming over," Darius hissed.
Skylar swam over, water dripping from her hair. "Hey, Max. Nice hat."
His brain short-circuited. Was that sarcasm? Was she flirting? Was she genuinely interested in his headwear?
"Thanks," he managed, voice cracking.
"You know," Skylar said, treading water, "you always wear that thing. Even in bio. I've been wondering what you're hiding under there."
The air between them felt charged. Max's hand went to his cap—his security blanket, his armor against everything that felt too real. But for once, he didn't tug it lower.
"Just this," he said, and pulled it off.
His curls sprang free, wild and uncontained. Skylar's eyes widened, then softened.
"Finally," she smiled. "I've been waiting to see the real Max all year."
The bull in his head—the voice that said he wasn't enough, that compared him to a dead goldfish keeper—quieted. Maybe this summer wouldn't be about hiding after all.
"Want to play chicken?" Skylar asked. "Darius and Jordan are demolishing everyone."
Max grinned, setting his hat on the pool edge. "Bet. Let's crush them."
