The Goldfish Secret Agent
Ruby had the most extraordinary hair in the whole neighborhood. It bounced like springs and shimmered with rainbows in the sunlight. But nobody knew her biggest secret—her pet goldfish, Finley, wasn't just an ordinary fish.
One Tuesday afternoon, Ruby was running through the garden when she noticed Finley floating extra close to his bowl's glass wall. He tapped his tiny fin: tap, tap, tap.
"Ruby!" said Finley in a bubbly voice. "I need your help. I'm a spy for the Mermaid Kingdom, and someone has stolen the Queen's pearl!"
Ruby's eyes grew wide. Her wild hair seemed to stand even taller with excitement.
A tiny whirlpool spun inside Finley's bowl, growing bigger and bigger until—WHOOSH!—Ruby shrank to the size of a thumb and tumbled right into the magical water world.
They swam past coral castles and schools of glittering fish. Finley explained, "The pearl makes the ocean glow. Without it, the sea will turn dark and cold."
Ruby spotted something shiny in the claws of a grumpy-looking crab. "There it is!"
But the crab wouldn't give it back. Ruby had an idea. She made funny faces and wiggled, and her crazy hair tickled the crab's claws. He laughed so hard he dropped the pearl!
Finley caught it just in time. The ocean sparkled again. Ruby helped Finley return the pearl to the Mermaid Queen, who rewarded Ruby with a special gift—magical bubbles that would let her visit anytime.
Back in her room, Ruby looked at Finley, now swimming peacefully in his bowl. Her hair still bounced with rainbows, but now it held an even bigger secret.
"Same time next week, Agent Ruby?" Finley winked.
Ruby grinned. Her ordinary goldfish was actually the best spy-friend a girl could ever have.
