The Goldfish's Secret Message
Lily sat by the edge of the blue swimming pool, dangling her feet in the cool water. Her iPhone glowed in her hands as she played yet another game, barely noticing the beautiful summer day around her.
Suddenly, something splashed! A tiny orange goldfish popped its head above the water and looked right at her.
"Put down your magic box," the goldfish said in a bubbly voice.
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Of course!" The goldfish swam closer. "I'm Finn, and I need your help. The Great Sphinx of Secrets is trapped, and only someone with a brave heart can save her. But you'll never find her if you're staring at that screen."
Lily looked at her iPhone, then back at Finn. She took a deep breath and set the phone on the grass.
Finn smiled—or at least, fish-smiled. "Follow me!"
The pool began to shimmer like liquid diamonds. As Lily watched, the water transformed into a swirling portal of rainbow colors.
"Jump in!" Finn called.
Lily closed her eyes and leaped.
When she opened them, she wasn't underwater at all. She stood in a golden desert where the sand sparkled like sugar. Before her rose a magnificent Sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like a sunset.
"Thank you for coming," the Sphinx rumbled kindly. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to put down their distractions and see the magic around them."
"How can I help?" Lily asked.
"Simply by remembering," the Sphinx said. "Magic lives in wonder, not screens. When you look up, really look up, the world becomes extraordinary."
She touched Lily's forehead with a gentle paw. Suddenly, Lily saw sparkles everywhere—in the sand, in the sky, in her own hands.
"You are now a Guardian of Wonder," the Sphinx declared. "Whenever you forget, close your eyes and remember this day."
Lily hugged the Sphinx's golden paw, then found herself back beside the pool.
Finn the goldfish waved his fin. "See you soon, Guardian!"
Lily smiled, picking up her iPhone. She didn't delete her apps, but from that day on, she knew when to look up and let the real magic in.
