The Goldfish's Secret Magic

Lily's goldfish, Sparkles, floated at the top of her bowl. Not moving. Not even a tiny wiggle.

"He's gone," Mom said gently. "I'll buy you a new fish tomorrow."

But Lily knew better. She had seen Sparkles do a little flip earlier that morning—like magic! That night, she sneaked her iPhone under the blanket and snapped a photo of Sparkles's bowl.

The screen glowed with tiny floating lights. In the photo, Sparkles wasn't just floating. He was DANCING!

"Whoa!" whispered Lily's fluffy dog, Buster, who had snuck into her room. His golden tail thumped against the bed.

Lily showed him the picture. "Look! He's doing the zombie dance from that game we play!"

Suddenly, Sparkles began to glow. His orange scales shimmered like tiny stars. He swirled around his bowl in a magical pattern, leaving trails of rainbow bubbles behind him.

Buster's eyes went wide. "That's not any regular fish."

Sparkles swam right up to the glass and winked at them. Then the strangest thing happened—the little goldfish LEAPT out of his bowl and landed on Lily's pillow, flopping happily.

"You're alive!" Lily cried, gathering him into her hands. His scales felt warm, like sunshine.

"Thank you for believing in me," Sparkles seemed to say, though he didn't speak aloud. His eyes twinkled with ancient magic.

Lily carefully placed him back in his bowl. "I'll never stop believing in magic, Sparkles. Never."

From that night on, whenever Lily felt lonely, she would peek at Sparkles's bowl. Sometimes he would do his little zombie dance. Sometimes he would create rainbow bubbles. And sometimes, when Buster was there too, they would all three share a secret smile.

Because magic isn't about what everyone else sees. It's about what you believe in your heart.

And Lily's heart was full of magic.
