The Goldfish's Secret Gift
Lily sat by the edge of Silver Pond, trailing her fingers in the cool water. Her parents had given her an iPhone for her birthday, but she barely touched it. The real world was too interesting.
Something golden flashed beneath the surface. Lily leaned closer, and a tiny goldfish with shimmering scales popped its head above the water.
"Hello, Lily," the goldfish said.
Lily rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"
"I can do much more," the goldfish bubbled. "I grant one special wish each century. Today, it's yours."
Lily thought hard. She could wish for anything — a million dollars, a castle, endless candy. But something else came to mind.
"I wish I could understand what animals are saying."
The goldfish's scales glowed brighter than the sun. "Granted!"
Suddenly, the woods around her filled with whispers. Birds sang about where to find the juiciest berries. Squirrels chattered about hiding acorns.
Then she heard a soft, wise voice nearby. A red fox emerged from the bushes.
"So, you can understand us now," said the fox. "Come with me. There's someone who needs your help."
Lily followed the fox through the forest until they reached a smaller pond where a baby duckling was stuck in some trash.
"I can't reach it alone," said the fox. "But together..."
Lily used her phone to call her dad, who brought a net. Together, they freed the duckling.
"That was your true gift," the fox told Lily. "Not understanding us, but using that understanding to help."
That night, Lily took one photo with her iPhone — of her new friends: the goldfish, the fox, and the rescued duckling. Some gifts don't come from phones or magic. The best gift of all is kindness shared with friends.
