The Goldfish's Secret Game
Lily was the best spy in the whole third grade. She could spy on squirrels stealing acorns, cats napping in sunbeams, and even her big brother doing homework. But her favorite thing to spy on was Finneus, her pet goldfish.
Finneus lived in a glass bowl on Lily's nightstand. He had shimmery orange scales and always swam to the front of his bowl when Lily came home from school.
One evening, while lightning flashed across the sky like giant camera flashes, Lily noticed something strange. Finneus wasn't swimming in circles like usual. He was swimming in straight lines, back and forth, as if... he were playing something?
Lily pressed her nose against the glass bowl. Finneus swam faster and faster. Suddenly, a tiny spark of lightning from the storm outside zipped through the window and into the bowl!
Finneus glowed with golden light. He grew bigger and bigger until he leaped right out of his bowl! But he didn't flop on the floor like a normal fish. Instead, he floated in the air, surrounded by sparkles.
"Want to play padel?" Finneus asked in a bubbly voice.
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk!"
"Only during lightning storms," Finneus bubbled. "Come outside! The sky padel court is waiting!"
He scooped Lily up with a fin, and suddenly they were floating above her backyard. The lightning had created a glowing court in the clouds! Other goldfish were there too, playing with balls made of lightning.
"In the magical realm, goldfish come to play padel during storms," Finneus explained. "Humans can't see us unless they truly believe in magic."
Lily played padel with Finneus until the storm passed. They laughed and played, and Lily even scored three points!
"You're a natural," Finneus said as they floated back to her room. "But you must keep this secret. Only spies who notice the magic get to play."
Lily nodded solemnly. "I promise."
Finneus shrank back to his normal size and splashed into his bowl. He winked at Lily before swimming a happy circle.
From then on, whenever lightning lit up the sky, Lily would smile at her fish bowl. The other kids thought she was just watching her pet. But Lily knew the truth: she was part of the secret sky padel club, and magic was real if you only paid attention.
