The Goldfish's Secret Baseball Lesson
Leo stared at his baseball mitt, feeling glum. He'd struck out three times at practice today.
"I'm never going to be good at baseball," he sighed, dropping onto his bed next to his fishbowl.
Inside, a bright orange goldfish named Fin swam in slow circles, watching Leo with big, curious eyes.
"You've got magic in you, Leo," bubbled a tiny voice.
Leo jumped up. "Who said that?"
"Me! Fin!" The goldfish did a splishy little flip. "I've been watching you. You're all tangled up in your head. Baseball isn't about thinking. It's about flowing."
"What do you know about baseball? You're a fish!" Leo giggled.
Fin swam to the top of the bowl. "I know about swimming! And baseball and swimming are the same thing."
"That's the silliest thing I've ever heard!"
"Meet me at the pond tomorrow at dawn," Fin said mysteriously. "I'll show you."
That night, Leo dreamt of splashing through starry water, swinging a bat that flowed like river reeds.
At sunrise, Leo crept to the pond behind his house. Fin was there—somehow swimming freely in the cool water.
"Watch me," Fin said. The little goldfish demonstrated perfect baseball moves through swimming. A sharp turn became a pivot. A dart forward became a slide into base. A graceful leap became a perfect swing.
"Swimming through water is all about balance and rhythm," Fin explained. "Your body knows what to do. You just have to trust it."
Leo practiced at the pond's edge, mimicking Fin's flowing movements. Swing and glide, turn and splash. For hours they played together—the boy and the magical fish—baseball and swimming blending into one beautiful dance.
"You're a natural!" Fin cheered as Leo's swing became smooth and powerful. "Like you've been doing this forever."
At Saturday's game, Leo stood at home plate, nervous but ready. He closed his eyes and remembered Fin's lessons. Flow like water. Trust your body.
*Swish!* The ball sailed over the fence—Leo's first home run!
"Way to go, Leo!" his team shouted. As they lifted him onto their shoulders, Leo spotted a bright orange goldfish swimming in a puddle near the dugout, winking one shiny eye.
Some friends, Leo discovered, come in the most surprising packages—and sometimes the best lessons are learned by following your flow.
