The Goldfish's Secret
Lily discovered the hidden pool behind a tangle of roses in her grandmother's garden. It wasn't an ordinary pool. The water sparkled with tiny silver lights, and ancient stones formed a perfect circle around it.
"Hello there," said a voice.
Lily jumped. Perched on a mossy stone was the smallest sphinx she had ever seen—no bigger than a cat, with soft sandy-colored fur and bright amber eyes. Unlike the fierce sphinxes in her storybooks, this one looked friendly.
"I'm Zephyr," the sphinx said. "Are you here to solve my riddle?"
"I didn't know you had one," Lily said.
Zephyr puffed out his chest proudly. "I always have a riddle. But first, you must meet my friend."
He nodded toward the pool. Lily leaned over the edge. A beautiful goldfish with scales like sunset oranges and pinks swam to the surface.
"This is Cleo," Zephyr said. "She's been waiting for someone like you."
"Waiting?" Lily asked.
Cleo spoke in a voice like gentle bubbles. "For someone who believes in magic. Are you that someone, Lily?"
Lily nodded. "I believe."
"Then answer Zephyr's riddle," Cleo said, "and you'll learn something wonderful."
Zephyr cleared his throat. "What shines like gold but isn't money, swims without fins, and lives in your heart?"
Lily thought hard. She looked at Cleo's golden scales. She thought about swimming through dreams. She thought about how she felt when she discovered something magical.
"Imagination!" Lily cried.
Zephyr's eyes lit up. "Correct!"
Cleo swam in a happy circle. "You've solved the secret of the pool. This place exists because children imagine it. The pool is filled with dreams, and I guard them. Zephyr guards me."
"Why do you need guarding?" Lily asked.
"Because grown-ups forget," Zephyr said sadly. "They stop believing, and then the pool fades away."
"I'll never forget," Lily promised.
"We know," Cleo said. "That's why you found us."
Lily visited the pool every day that summer. She learned that magic doesn't disappear—it just waits for someone to believe again.
Years later, Lily's own daughter discovered the hidden pool behind a tangle of roses. She saw a tiny sphinx on a mossy stone and a goldfish with sunset scales swimming below.
"Are you here to solve my riddle?" Zephyr asked.
And the magic began again.
