The Goldfish's Midnight Wish
Emma lay on her rug, watching Captain Bubbles swim in his bowl. The orange goldfish had been her friend since her birthday last month.
"I wish you could talk," she whispered.
Captain Bubbles swam to the surface and looked at her with his round eyes. Suddenly, a tiny bubble popped, and a small voice said, "I can! But only on special nights under the moon."
Emma sat up, eyes wide. "Tonight's a full moon! What do you wish for?"
"I need to reach the Wishing Well in the park by midnight," Captain Bubbles said. "Or I'll stay a fish forever."
Emma grabbed her backpack and carefully carried Captain Bubbles in his portable bowl. They went running down the sidewalk, past sleeping houses and glowing streetlamps. The moon lit their path like silver sparkles.
In the park, something shuffled toward them. It moved slowly, with arms stretched out. Emma gasped—it looked like a zombie!
"Don't be scared," Captain Bubbles bubbled. "Look closer."
Emma squinted. The "zombie" was just old Mr. Higgins in his bathrobe, walking slowly because of his bad knee. He was searching for his lost glasses.
"Can I help, Mr. Higgins?" Emma asked.
Mr. Higgins smiled. "What a kind young friend you are." Together they found his glasses near a bench. The clock tower chimed—eleven fifty-five!
"Run!" Captain Bubbles cried.
Emma reached the Wishing Well just as the moon's reflection shimmered on the water. She made her wish: "Let Captain Bubbles be happy, whether fish or... anything else!"
A flash of golden light filled the air. When it faded, Captain Bubbles was still a goldfish—but now he could talk whenever he wanted, and Emma could understand all creatures.
"Being a fish isn't so bad," Captain Bubbles said, swimming happily. "Especially with a friend like you."
Emma walked home, no longer running but strolling under the stars. She had learned something wonderful: sometimes the scariest things aren't scary at all, and the best wishes are the ones you make for others.
