The Goldfish's Midnight Pool
Lily discovered the secret behind the old garden wall on a Tuesday evening exactly when the sky turned the color of a ripe orange. Through a crack in the stones, she spotted something glimmering—a tiny pool no bigger than a bathtub, filled with water that sparkled like captured stars.
And there, swimming in circles, was a goldfish with scales that shifted from sunset pink to ocean blue.
"You're finally here," said the goldfish. "I've been waiting exactly seven hundred and three years. Well, give or take a century. Time gets fuzzy when you're magical."
Lily rubbed her eyes. "Goldfish don't talk."
"This one does," the goldfish said with a grin. "And I have something wonderful to show you. But first—you must promise to keep a secret."
"I promise," Lily whispered.
"Then hold out your hand," said the goldfish.
Lily reached into the water, and suddenly something tiny and wooden floated toward her—a little padel no longer than her thumb, carved from moonlight and oak.
"This is the Midnight Padel," the goldfish explained. "It doesn't hit balls. It ripples magic into the pool. Each stroke at midnight makes a wish come true—for someone who really needs it."
Lily gently dipped the tiny padel into the water. *Ripple, ripple, sparkle.* The pool's surface turned into liquid silver, and Lily saw images floating in the ripples—a lonely boy finding a friend, a lost kitten being rescued, a grandmother receiving a letter from far away.
"Are those... wishes?" Lily asked.
"Wishes that came true," said the goldfish. "Every night, someone kind uses the Midnight Padel. Tonight, that someone is you."
Lily thought carefully. Then she dipped the padel again and whispered, "I wish for everyone who feels lonely to find a friend."
The pool burst into golden light. Hundreds of tiny sparkles floated up like fireflies, drifting out into the world to carry her wish.
"Perfect," said the goldfish, swimming happily. "Kindness is the strongest magic. Come back tomorrow night. The pool will be waiting—and so will I."
Lily walked home under the orange-tinted sky, her pocket warm with the tiny magic padel, her heart full of secret wonder. Some nights, she still visits the pool behind the garden wall, where wishes ripple like moonlight and a certain goldfish waits with a smile.
